mahakaleshwar temple at Kalanaur

Here the shivlingam is in horizontal position. It is the only temple of shiva in india, where shivlingam is in horizontal position.

Kalanaur is known for lord Shiva’s rest place. During Treta Yuga (The Yuga of Lord Rama)on the time of Demon king Ravana. Ravana was the worshiper of Lord Shiva and he obtained the golden Lanka from Lord Shiva and one of the follower of Ravana advised him to bring Shiva to Lanka and he stared praying Lord Shiva day and night and lord Shiva impressed by Ravana said i agree to come with you but i have one condition Ravana says ok lord go on lord Shiva told to Ravana i will come with you but u should not look back until u reach lanka,if u look back i will stop there itself. While Ravana was walking in the front Lord Shiva made lot of clouds with his Maya( Magic ) so that they cannot see each other, Ravana in that clouds not knowing whether Lord Shiva is following him or not turns back to see Shiva. Then shiva says u turned back and looked at me so i am stopping here and i cannot come with u to Lanka you have to go alone to the Lanka.
