Story:

Once upon a time, that is about 10th century at Nellore district beside Kalangi river, few cow taker while swimming one of the cow taker was drowning in river and was calling for help but none could help him. suddenly in water he found a stone and holded it tightly and was praying for the god to save him with devotion suddenly the stone rose from the river and brought the cow taker to the shore of the river then they noticed it was Goddess idol, the goddess idol was in horizontal position immediately they runned to the village to inform all. Further, villagers reached the place to see the idol, then they dint know what to do with idol so they kept the idol over there without moving thinking we shall think of it tomorrow. But in the night there was big thunder which was very bright, noticing that all villages went to see the goddess idol and they were amazed to see that idol moved from its place and was in standing position facing south. After performing poojas, they lifted the Idol. Idol was carried to the current place and installed it here.

The goddess at earlier days used to called as Tenkali (Dakshina Kali) later the name Tenkali replaced by Chengali and then to current name Chengalamma. Then the village formed around this temple and named it as Chengali Peta. During the British ruling, they changed the name to Sullurpeta. However there is a another version of sullurpeta, people residing since ages used to say that, at the time of Brahmotsavam which happens once in 7 seven, during this time "Sudimanu" will round around the Temple hence this place is called as Sullurpeta.

This temple was built by the people from Balija caste so they are performing Nithya archana to the Goddess and the ritual follows.

400 years back, villagers tried to build door, but Goddess appeared in dream of one of the worshiper and instructed not to build the doors as she is here to give blessings to the pilgrims at all times, but some off the villagers dint believed her and made doors for the temple. The doors were made and brought and kept near the tree in the night to install it in the morning. But when they came in the morning to install the doors they ware amazed to see that the doors was pulled into the tree and doors had roots. looking at that they understood that goddess doesnt want to install the door and withdrawn the dream of making doors for the temple.  By following Goddess instructions, the villagers left the temple opened for 24 hours.
