Once every year, men and women, dressed in blood red
robes run around the temple square abusing the goddess using the choicest of
abuses, in the bawdiest possible language; heaping insults on goddess
Bhagavati.
While the ones in trance go about this absurd form of
worship, others throw stones, turmeric, dirt, sticks and chickens onto the
temples rafters. This behavior, absolutely intolerable and sacrosanct at it may
seem, is actually an integral part of the grand, yearly worship ritual at
Kodungallur, that is rooted in Tantra. One of the most powerful sites of
Tantra worship in the Deccan, the Bhagavati temple is visited by thousands of
devotees who come here seeking divine help when everything else has failed.
